Cockroach Extermination

The species decides the plan, so the inspection comes before any product. German cockroaches are small, tan, about half an inch, and they stay within a few feet of food and warmth — behind the dishwasher, under the sink lip, inside the microwave chassis, in the hinge void of upper cabinets. They ride into homes on cardboard, used appliances and moving boxes, which is why we see them in Patuxent Park and Great Mills rentals during Pax River PCS turnover season and in furnished units near San Souci Plaza and St. Mary's Square. Oriental cockroaches are darker, glossier and slower, and they live outside in mulch, leaf litter and crawlspace soil until humidity or heavy rain drives them through a gap under the sill plate. In Town Creek, Cedar Cove and the wooded edges of Bay Forest, roaches found on a basement floor after a Chesapeake-humid week are almost always this second group.

That difference changes what a fair fix looks like. German cockroaches will not be solved by spraying baseboards — repellent sprays scatter them deeper into wall voids and can split one population into several. The correct approach is bait they carry back, growth regulator so the nymphs never mature, and monitors that show whether counts are falling. Expect two to three visits spaced about two weeks apart, which lines up with the egg-case hatch cycle. Oriental and American cockroach pressure, by contrast, is often resolved in one thorough treatment plus a correction list: reseal the crawlspace access door, extend downspouts away from the foundation, pull mulch back from the slab, and replace the failed weatherstrip on a Wildewood garage service door. We do not blanket-fog occupied interiors — it drives roaches into voids and does nothing about the moisture that keeps re-seeding them.

A single roach sighting does not always mean an infestation, and we will tell you that on the visit rather than sell you a program you do not need. One large American cockroach in a Chancellors Run Estates basement in August is usually a wanderer from the drain or crawlspace, and a perimeter and moisture correction handles it. Live German cockroaches visible in daylight, droppings that look like coarse pepper in a cabinet corner, or a musty odor near the sink cabinet all indicate an established population with hidden egg cases — that one needs the full multi-visit bait program, and shortcuts on it simply restart the clock.

Rentals and multifamily buildings in Lexington Park need one extra step: roaches move through shared walls, plumbing chases and outlet penetrations. Treating one unit in a Carver Heights or Esperanza building while the adjoining unit stays untreated usually means reinfestation within a month or two.
